Terry Orsi, aka Barefoot Terry, recently completed his first 50 mile event. Â We talk to Terry about how he began running barefoot, why he advocates barefoot running and how he keeps his feet “smooth as a baby’s bottom”.

This was an wonderful podcast. Been BF running for over two years and I an also an evangelist of the style. Thanks so much for doing this interview. I am still laughing about the Hoka Oreo.
Now, tell me, what is the brand of that padded tape. I must have some of that! 🙂
Hi Michael!
I was too lazy to go and get some seriously good tape. I think it was just Band-aid brand padded tape (kinda like moleskin on a roll)and some regular old athletic tape. Hahaha! This was my cheap “emergency plan”. Turns out I needed it!
Thanks for listening!!! Perhaps one day we’ll see each other on the trail!
Thanks Terry. I have been using a silk like surgical tape, but once the the sweat pumps get going it tends to fall off. Bandaids work well, but are hard to stick to a sweaty foot. 🙂 Maybe I should just pack some “Spackle” in my kit.
Terry,
Don’t you think it is unnatural to run a 50-mile trail race?
Please don’t get me wrong. I run barefoot as much as I can.
But the podcast made me think that it is too much suffering to try such a feat.
Hi Adolfo,
I would not say it is unnatural to run a 50-mile race. The blister that developed early in the race was a very unusual occurrence. I have never previously had such a blister, especially at the mileage that it developed. The second thing is that I would not say that I “suffered” too much. I felt great at mile 31 and, generally speaking, pretty good until mile 47. The last climb of 1000 feet over 3 miles is tough, especially when tired. Perhaps not everyone has the desire to run 50+ miles. If you have the desire to run ultra distances, then I say go for it! If not, no worries, no criticism.
If I was to attempt another 50 mile race or even a 100 mile race, I would have to seriously consider some type of footwear (very minimal – Sockwas or huaraches). I have not come to that decision yet. So, we shall see what the future holds.
