Are you looking for something warm for the cold winter runs? Let’ take a look at GoLite’s Rogue Valley Thermal Tights and Black Mountain Thermal Wind Pants.
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS
The Rogue Valley Thermal Tights fit snug (like any other tights). There is a small zippered rear pocket (can fit 4 GUs), zippered ankles, and an inside front panel to protect “the boys”. One thing to note is that the tights are “low-riding” around the hips. You will need to actually use the drawstring to tighten the tights around your waist. If you do not, you may have a “plumber’s crack” when squatting in these tights. Let’s save your friends that view.
The Black Mountain Thermal Wind Pants are semi-fitted and fit normal around the hips. The pants have zippered legs and articulated “clamshell” knees (my wife says they look like flaps). They are definitely comfortable just hanging around the house. I love the overall feel next to my skin with the fleece lining. The pants have two zippered regular pockets on the sides and one small zippered pocket on the back (can fit 4 GUs).
TRAIL TESTING
The Rogue Valley tights definitely blocked the wind and kept me nice and toasty at temperatures around 20’s degree Fahrenheit. The tights tested okay in light rain conditions. After a 5 plus hour run in the rain, the tights do absorb the water. Please note, the tights were designed for cold and/or windy dry weather conditions which they do accomplish.
The Black Mountain pants add a little more insulation than the tights. They performed flawlessly in cold and/or windy dry weather conditions. The pants absorbed the rain water in rainy conditions. However, they work well in light rain conditions and when used in other activities like cycling and activities in the snow.
