  • I’m 71 years old. I successfully completed Bigfoot in 2022 and DNFed Moab in 2023. Sleep was not the main factor. I completed Bigfoot (2 hours ahead of the final cutoff) on trail naps of 20 minutes – some as short as 2-3 minutes! I slept better at Moab (90 minutes each afternoon to avoid the heat) but DNFed at 120 miles. Running solo, I lost touch with reality during the 3rd night, crawled into my bivvy sac, and went to sleep – not because I was tired, I was just “out of it”. I was awakened 4 hours later by the sweeper and abandoned at the next aid station. Why did I lose touch with reality? Several factors (age? altitude?), probably, but I think mainly poor nutrition. I did not eat enough protein and fat and relied too much on Cliff Blocks. It’s a great product but we need more when we run more than 48 hours. Candice’s aid stations have great food. Take advantage of them!
