Newton running shoes are a “transition” shoe for those looking to transition into “better” running form.  The Motion (Women’s Version) is technically a road shoe, but can be utilized on non-technical trails.

INTIAL IMPRESSIONS

The Newton Motion shoe is a Stability Performance Trainer built for runners wanting a daily training shoe and also a faster tempo-pace run or race shoe.  It is more supportive and structured than its lightweight neutral trainer like the Gravity.  The Motion has medial posting to offset pronation thus a stiffer ride than the Gravity.

Out of the box, the shoe fit true to size. The toe box was a little snug compared to the Gravity (neutral shoe with less material in the upper).  The outsole is similar to the Gravity. The Motion came in at slightly above 10 oz. (approximately 1 oz. heavier than the Gravity). One additional change in 2013 (besides the color) is the top eyelet has been moved just a bit to line up over the first metatarsal head.

ROAD (AND SOME TRAIL) TESTING

The Motion tested well on the road and non-technical trails. It has a smooth ride for a stability shoe. However, you will notice the difference of the stability trainer versus the neutral trainer.  I believe the older versions of the Motion were less “stiff” than the new Motion.  Those who may not be used to Newton’s Action/Reaction lugs may initially take some time getting used to.

With the “swiss-cheese” like upper, the Motion is very well ventilated and drains/dries well in wet conditions.  I have tried running sockless in the Motion.  However, I felt hotspots on top of my foot. Thus, I would not recommend going sockless.

Overall, the Motion is another great product in the Newton line of “transition” shoes for those runners looking to transition to a better running form.

CONCLUSION
The Newton Motion is a lightweight stability trainer for runners looking to transition to a mid-foot strike. Because of the lightweight and stability features, the Motion is great for everyday training to racing on roads and non-technical trails.
