INITIAL IMPRESSIONS

The Saucony Peregrine 2 ($100) is a great update from the original Peregrine with a more durable/lighter upper and improved traction. The shoe is form fitting, that is, it does fit snug. However, I did not need to go up a half size. The Peregrine 2 comes in slightly above 10 oz with a 4mm offset. It has the following features:

  • Hydramax Collar Lining – great moisture wicking properties
  • Heel ProGrid LITE – 20% more responsive than EVA with great cushioning
  • XT-900 carbon rubber outsole – great traction and durability

TRAIL TESTING

I loved the race-type feel of the Peregrine 2.  It has a 4mm offset and great protection from rocks, roots and whatever surprises on the trail. The updated upper is reinforced with plastic strip overlays throughout the shoe. The toe bumper is very protective when hammering into a protruding rock.

The Peregrine 2 tested well in most conditions (wet, muddy, rocky, (no snow)) and at varies distances. The updated outsole has sufficient traction for muddy surfaces. It did not retain mud like in the original version. It drained well in wet conditions. In the “lab”, the evaporation test results were “Good”.

Overall, a solid trail shoe in a minimal offering with sufficient protection.

Weight Breakdown

CONCLUSION

The Peregrine 2 did not stray too far from the already great features of the original Peregrine. I loved the improved upper and great traction. I would recommend using the Peregrine 2 in any type of training runs, as well as, at all race distances.  The Peregrine 2 is a great competitor in the increasing line of minimalist shoes on the market. The real question is – will the Peregrine line continue to be around with the soon to be release Saucony Kinvara TR (July 2012 release) – low profile with 4mm drop at less than 9 oz?Whatever the outcome, Saucony has a great minimalist offering in the Peregrine 2.

  • Thanks for this review. Informative and helpful to me.This is a model I’ve slipped on and really considering giving a go.

  • Would you recommend the Peregrine 2 for a pronating runner or are they best left to the neutral runner like so many minimalist shoes?
    Cheers!

    • Hi Graham, If you are an overpronator, I would not recommend the Peregrine 2. There is no medial post or duel density midsole. It is designed for the neutral runner.

      • Cheers James – do you know of any trail shoes with a 4mm drop that would be suitable for a overpronator. Love the Brooks Pure Cadence as a road shoe and suits me perfectly but finding it difficult to find something similar but for heading out on the trails (distances 50km+) in…
Any assistance or suggestions would be great!
        Thanks!
