Ashley, that was awesome. I also think of the mean kids from ages ago. 38 years old, I *know* they do not think of me, but when I have a hard spot and there’s another hill in front of me I think about being picked on back in the day; I think of my exhusband and “Can’t bully me now, punk. I woulda dropped your beer gut carcass 50 miles ago.” When I think I can’t do something I think of them being at the finish line and what they would get to say if I DNFed.
“Some day I’ll be [running in a] big ol’ [ultra] and all you’re ever gonna be is mean. Some day I’ll be [fast] enough that you can’t hit me and all you’re ever gonna be is mean.”
I loved this whole show but that part really got to me. Thank you. I’ll think of it when I’m out there alone.
Great show! Loved the discussion about mental toughness and mental training. As a sport psychologist I believe that every athlete must draw on personal strengths as well as experience to increase mental toughness. From a professional stand point I do believe there are tools and skills that can be taught, practiced, and applied to increase mental toughness.
